Introduction
In the field of nursing, evidence-based practice (EBP) is deemed essential to guarantee that patient care aligns with the most reliable research and evidence. The initial phase of conducting an EBP project involves formulating a meticulously structured research question. This paper undertakes the analysis of a research question concerning the empathy displayed by registered nurses (RNs) towards patients with chronic diseases, while also delving into the components of the PICO (Population, Intervention, Comparison, Outcome) framework.
Independent and Dependent Variables
In the research question, the variable under scrutiny is the RN’s adherence to Christian faith. In contrast, the variable under study is the manifestation of empathy towards patients with chronic diseases (Younas et al., 2019). The researcher aims to investigate potential correlations between the RN’s religious convictions and their capacity to exhibit empathy towards patients facing health adversities.
Qualitative vs. Quantitative Data
If incorporated into a questionnaire by the researcher, this inquiry would generate qualitative data. Qualitative data is collected through open-ended inquiries, facilitating a comprehensive understanding of participants’ experiences, attitudes, and beliefs (Polit & Beck, 2022). Given the nature of the query, which delves into the personal beliefs and conduct of RNs, qualitative data serves as a more apt means of capture.
PICO Components
- Population: RNs practicing a Christian faith.
- Intervention: Demonstration of empathy towards patients with chronic diseases.
- Comparison: RNs who do not practice the Christian faith.
- Outcome: Difference in empathy levels towards patients with chronic diseases.
New EBP Questions
- In elderly patients with dementia (P), how does music therapy (I), compared to traditional pharmacological interventions (C), affect agitation levels (O)?
- In pregnant women with gestational diabetes (P), does regular exercise (I), compared to dietary modifications (C), result in better blood glucose control (O)?
Conclusion
Crafting meticulously structured research questions using the PICO framework is imperative in EBP. This approach steers the research trajectory, ensuring study outcomes are pertinent to clinical application. Through precise delineation of Population, Intervention, Comparison, and Outcome, researchers channel their efforts toward addressing specific clinical questions, thereby enhancing patient outcomes.
