Alzheimer’s Disease: Is the Condition Degenerative?

Alzheimer’s disease is a neural-degenerative condition that is slow in progression and irreversible. It triggers the degradation of neurons in the brain that control cognition and memory. The body cannot reproduce the nerve cells after damage. Hence, the disorder causes dementia, which is attributed to the mild loss of memory, judgment, and functional capacity (Bhushan, et al., 2018). The major problem encompassing Alzheimer’s disease is that no drug treatment can cure it; besides, its cause is not determined. The condition is believed to result from the deposition of abnormal proteins around neurons and causing continuous damage (Cummings et al., 2019). Deficiency in vitamin D is also deemed to contribute to the disease. Alzheimer’s disease demonstrates no signs of impairment at the first stage and progresses slowly without being noted.

The appropriate solution proposed is supportive therapy, which is based on controlling the adverse symptoms. This approach targets to assist the individual in adapting and thriving in a typical environment and designs the coping mechanisms for the patient and the family. Cholinesterase inhibitors are medications that can be used to minimize the symptoms for a short time (Weller, & Budson, 2018). However, the condition can be prevented by the secession of smoking and alcohol, including good diet and exercises. The promotion of a quality lifestyle could have a positive impact on controlling disease progression. The topic was selected because the condition presents a unique dimension compared to other body malfunctions. The knowledge on Alzheimer’s disease is relatively limited, and the interest was based on exploring and gaining a deep understanding of the disorder. The research questions utilized on the topic include; Is the condition degenerative? What are its causes, symptoms, and treatment? How can it be prevented? What are its developmental stages?
