Coronavirus Symptoms, Causes, Prevention Nursing

The reviewed video, presented on the YouTube channel ReviewRegisteredNurseRN, describes the main features of the coronavirus that causes COVID-19. In the beginning, the speaker describes the key biological properties of the coronavirus and focuses on its effects and main symptoms (“Coronavirus COVID-19” 00:00:12-00:00:28). She also pays particular attention to the distinctive outbreaks of the coronavirus, particularly MERS and SARS (“Coronavirus COVID-19” 00:00:40-00:00:46). The origin of the coronavirus is described as a chain in which the virus originates in an animal and can be transmitted to humans, thereby causing an epidemic. The risks of contracting take up much of the discussion and relate to transmission routes. In addition, the speaker talks about the danger of the coronavirus and gives statistics on how deadly COVID-19 is (“Coronavirus COVID-19” 00:04:39-00:06:05). To describe specific risk factors, modes of transmission of the coronavirus are considered (“Coronavirus COVID-19” 00:06:06-00:07:28). The nature of the coronavirus is described as standard in this context because the transmission mechanisms are typical: airborne and by direct contact with mucous membranes. The incubation period (from 2 to 14 days) is an essential factor to consider to be on the safe side.

One of the critical clarifications concerns the possible asymptomatic course of the disease. According to the speaker, although a person may not feel sick, they can still carry the virus, which makes it difficult to control the spread of the disease (“Coronavirus COVID-19” 00:07:55-00:08:07). The symptoms of COVID-19 are similar to those that many people experience with common viruses. The speaker mentions such symptoms as fever, cough, sore throat, fatigue, and shortness of breath (“Coronavirus COVID-19” 00:08:20-00:08:25). As the most effective mechanism for detecting the presence of coronavirus in the body, a special PCR test is considered, which allows identifying the infection by evaluating the genetic material taken (“Coronavirus COVID-19” 00:08:30-00:08:42). Today, these tests are available to everyone, and at the moment, this is the most accurate way to determine whether a person is a carrier of the virus or not. The presence or absence of antibodies, in this case, is an indicator of the transferred or not transferred illness, respectively. This applies to any cases of COVID-19 detection because such a test shows the presence of the virus in the body, even if the disease is asymptomatic.

One of the main parts of the video is devoted to assessing available preventive methods. The speaker describes the procedures that the public should follow to minimize the risks of contracting and spreading COVID-19 (“Coronavirus COVID-19” 00:08:43-00:09:47). One of the most important and, at the same time, accessible activities are constant handwashing that needs to be performed thoroughly. Particular attention is paid to the habits of touching those parts of the body through which the coronavirus can enter the body, and this concerns, first of all, the face. Travel restrictions and avoidance of crowded places are rated as critical rules to follow to reduce the risk of infection. Public etiquette when sneezing and coughing should also be observed: the mouth and nose should be covered with a disposable napkin that must be disposed of later. The speaker also gives instructions on how to wear a medical mask by following a special protocol (“Coronavirus COVID-19” 00:09:48-00:10:03). At the end of the video, a note is given stating that symptomatic treatment of COVID-19 is the only one available.
