Google’s Organizational Culture

Background

Organizations worldwide are often successful because of their way of doing things. Each organization has its way of making profits and improving its operations. Culture is the primary tool that drives employers and employees to work hard and achieve their goals. Without culture in any system, even the society itself would collapse. Culture is how a group thinks, behaves, and interacts with each other, whether in the community or an organization. Culture is the color a group of people paints to the outside world. One is recognized as belonging to a particular group or organization based on behavior. Culture in most organizations reveals itself in five ways: in mission statements of organizations, rituals, stories, and languages, the physical layout, and in rules and policies created by the organization for the workers to follow. Google company is one of the best in terms of its advanced technology and could be referred to as number one worldwide. The paper discusses the culture of Google organization and what influences its workers to achieve the company’s goals.

Mission Statement

The mission statement describes the organization’s purpose and scope of the company’s operations, highlights its services and products, and shows its intended audience or customers the values to follow. Furthermore, it includes the philosophies formulated by a company, the key issues the company handles, and its vision and goals to be achieved. Mission statements are mostly developed by the founders of the company. Through the mission statement, people can know and understand why the company was created in the first place (Alegre et al., 2018). Google’s mission statement is directed to organize information and data and make it accessible and valuable to the population worldwide. Google is a company with the most reliable search engine in the world; thus, one can see the company’s intention in its mission statement. People can search anything on google for knowledge, making it worthwhile to anyone.

Ranging from google maps to the new technology called Artificial Intelligence, Google can make all the information people need next to them on their laptops and smartphones. Indeed, the Google company workers follow this to the latter by ensuring that they are hardworking and flexible to cope with the advanced technology and the changing issues customers want. Mission statements also help organizations make good decisions that could help in profits and direct the business in the best direction possible (Alegre et al., 2018). The future of every organization is entire up to its mission which guides the organization for decades and even centuries without losing direction. Google has been able to go in the right direction for decades because of its mission statement, which has enabled the company to continue with its technological advancements.

Rituals

Rituals within an organization refer to the events that occur repetitively either annually or monthly. Rituals give employees a sense of belonging and remind them of the company culture, which is usually respected and followed by every worker. During the rituals, employees interact and have connections, creating a positive environment for them to work (Zlatko & Maciej, 2019). Furthermore, rituals make employees work hard, for many are awarded and congratulated during this time for their hard work. It reinforces employees’ behaviors in workplaces such as google firms by creating focus and making the workers feel at home or belong to a particular society. In google company, an example of a ritual is whereby the newly employed wear hats with google colors and write the word “Noogler.” The new employees take this act as an honor to be welcomed to the organization as a family. The power of rituals cannot be underestimated, for it shows a great deal to the employees who feel that they are more valued. Most employees do the rituals as part of their jobs; not many miss this day. It shows that the workers could work harder with proper motivation in rewards and appreciation. Therefore, companies should hold rituals more often to maintain their structures and ensure that their cultures are still there.

Stories and Language

Stories and languages are told to the new employees to give them a good head start in the company. Stories act as motivation to set the trend for the new employees who are likely to follow the footsteps of heroes who made the company proud. Reports may show how the organization fought from its downfall to be strong and make more profits than before. It also highlights the excellent leadership of various managers who led the company to victory and motivate the new employees to try hard to work in unison to achieve its goals. Most companies also use languages known to everyone for accessible communication.

Employees come from different places, and it will be vital if they are received with a common language to have proper training and orientation as they start their new journey. Google CEO Sundar Pichai is the perfect example of the best CEO and speaker. Sundar Pichai has led the google company to more development like developing google maps in Africa and using AI technology. Sundar Pichai also came up with ideas for android for google company which was a huge success.

Physical Layout

The physical layout is how the offices and buildings of the company speak to people outside the organization. It says more about the company’s culture and gives the mission statement importance. Google company offices are easily noticeable because of the colors painted with inspiration from the colors in the google logo. It means that the company is loyal to itself, starting from how its buildings are painted. Vibrant colors signify the innovation google company has done in the past years. Painting vibrant colors give the new employees the impression that they are in a giant technological company where innovation is a continuous process and hard work pays. Besides, employees may be motivated by the layout to work harder and have their innovations posted or embraced in the company. Google has ample workspaces where many employees can be accommodated in one room, allowing many employees to interact and learn from each other (Lubis & Hanum, 2020). The connection between employees also makes work easier by assisting, coaching, and delegating tasks to each other to be flexible and fast in adapting to every new problem that arises from the customers.

Rules and Policies

Rules and policies must be in any company for it to succeed or achieve its goals. The company formulates policies for acceptable and unacceptable behaviors. Google has guidelines that include serving their customers with integrity, respect, and support from colleagues, avoiding conflicts with each other, the issue of confidentiality, and protecting google belongings (Lubis & Hanum, 2020). Google encourages enduring financial responsibility and obeying the law such as international trade laws and competition laws. The rules and policies are followed for a better operation of the company.

Organizational culture is an essential aspect of any organization, as stated above. The five signs of organizational culture were open to everyone within the company. The signs emphasized that this company was proud of its results and that the employees were qualified and provided with the necessary equipment and other stuff needed to make the company more effective. Google company has been successful for a long time because of the culture its boss Sundar Pichai introduced and implemented. Companies need to take culture as an essential aspect of their survival.
