Health and Safety at Mental Workers’ Settings

Workplace safety is a complex area related to the health and well-being of people at work. By law, the employer is obliged to protect the workers’ health and well-being to the extent practicable. The work of medical workers is one of the socially necessary, responsible, and complex types of activity, which is associated with a high level of stress. As a rule, the occupational diseases of doctors are longer and more complex compared to representatives of other occupational groups. A number of regulations help to protect the mental worker’s health and to make their labor safer.

I would like to work in the sphere of psychiatry. It is mandatory to have a medical license to carry out medical activities. Now, among all, I have a COVID-19 vaccination certificate which is required for social professions. I am also going to get a degree that will allow me to be a psychiatrist. As for psychiatry, it can be stressful to communicate with people with mental diseases for a long time, so supervision should be provided. A mental worker faces a lot of hostility and aggression, as well as assaults. Getting a mental disease is the most concerning danger for me in this field.

I believe that it is necessary to appoint officials responsible for mental workers’ health and safety issues both at the national level and at the level of individual medical institutions. Occupational health is also discussed by WHO (2020) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2018). It needs to be put in place to regulate the proper and equitable distribution of the workforce, hours of work, rest breaks, and the reduction of administrative responsibilities imposed on mental health workers.
