Profession of Arms and Human Resource Management

It can be challenging to provide a brief definition of the Profession. This term incorporates a range of values and guiding principles outlined in the Army Code of Conduct, the Army White Paper, and other documents (U.S. Army, 2010). Therefore, Army leaders are individuals who comprehend the importance of these values, follow all the Army principles, and strive to develop these strong qualities in their subordinates (U.S. Army, 2010). The Human Resource Sergeant represents the human resource point of view in the Profession of Arms. This position is essential in relation to the Army principles and guidelines. The HR Sergeant plays several crucial roles, including leadership, supporting the Army culture, and promoting the Profession.

The Leadership role of the Human Resource Sergeant consists of several aspects. First, the HR Sergeant is responsible for providing necessary expertise, development, and service to their subordinates when the latter require it (U.S. Army, 2019). The second aspect is represented by the Sergeant’s responsibility to ensure a sufficient supply of resources and highly qualified staff. In addition, HR Sergeants act as experts who ensure that no unfavorable events occur that can threaten the safety of their superiors and subordinates or disturb general peace and security in the unit. Finally, the leadership role of the Sergeants requires them to monitor and supervise the coordination of both current and prospective operating environments and resources.

The second important role executed by the Human Resource Sergeant in the Profession of Arms is supporting the Army culture. This is manifested in their responsibility to ensure a strong connection and facilitate the interaction between the Army culture and the existing climate (U.S. Army, 2010). To do that, the HR Sergeant implements the institutional practices and procedures that allow for strengthening the Army specialists’ understanding of the Army culture. In addition, this aspect involves the Sergeant’s role in ensuring that all Army specialists have access to the resources necessary to improve and maintain their health and well-being (Steadman, 2018). To realize these aspects of their role, the HR Sergeant has to establish strong and trusting relationships with all members of the Army personnel.

Promoting the Profession is the third role represented by the Human Resource Sergeant. This responsibility is also manifested in different ways; first, the Sergeants can explain how to become Army professionals to all individuals who may express the desire to do so (U.S. Army, 2010). They are also responsible for providing the Army staff with information about training and development programs available to them at the given time. Human Resource Sergeants can also promote the Profession by handling the awards, leaves, and personnel readiness (U.S. Army, 2019). In addition, their duties in promoting the Profession of Arms include educating soldiers about important concepts such as accountability, Army values, Mission Command, and other Military functions.

It can be concluded that human resource management, represented by the Human Resource Sergeants, is an essential part of the Profession of Arms and its principles. Some of the main roles of the HR Sergeant are the Leadership role, the role of supporter of the Army culture, and the role a promoter of the Profession. The responsibilities involved in performing these roles include ensuring that the Army has sufficient resources and staff and that all specialists have access to the necessary training and professional growth programs.
