Participants in the medical study receive various benefits, including free medical coverage and medical attention anytime without a medical appointment. In addition, they may receive a compensation fee after the study because most research compensates their participants (QPS, 2020). Moreover, various diagnoses are usually made during the study that benefits the patients. Also, through the study, the participants can give back to society by contributing to improving society and the field of medical research. Taking part in medical research will enable the participant to play an essential role in their medical care because it allows them to meet experts in the medical field who understand their medical needs (QPS, 2020). Despite the risks, participants face various risks during the study.
The expected risks during medical research include psychological, social-economical, physical, socioeconomic, and confidentiality laws. Psychological risks yield negative impacts, including depression, anxiety, shock, guilt, reduced or lack of self-esteem, mental stress, sleep deprivation, and constant change of behavior in the participants (UC Davis, 2022). Social and economic risks to the participants during the research include lack of respect, subject labeling, and economic risks, such as loss of wages and income. Another risk includes the loss of participants’ confidentiality due to information leakage by the medical team. They might be affected by legal risks; it happens when the medical team violates legal laws; hence, the participants become the prime suspects.
It is important to consider ethical issues in any medical research field. Major ethical issues in the medical field include equality of resources, participants’ rights, safety, confidentiality, informed consent, voluntary practice, and equity of resources (Avant healthcare professionals, 2021). The ethical issues to be considered before the medical study include participant informed consent and voluntary practice (Avant healthcare professionals, 2021). The participants should be informed about the evaluation of the experiments to be performed on them and the procedures to be done. In addition, they should inform them about the purpose and importance of the study and how the results will be acquired and used in the study. Moreover, they should know who will handle the obtained data, be able to see the results and who can access the information. Finally, the medical study participation should be voluntary, and the participants should always feel free to withdraw at any given time without affecting the results of their future participation.
The ethical issues that the medical research team encountered at the end of the study include confidentiality and anonymity. The participants’ confidentiality after the study is essential, and all information that identifies the participant should be excluded from any report (Avant healthcare professionals, 2021). After the studies, the participants should always be kept anonymous in any report. All the information used in the study that involves the participants should be kept anonymous to provide privacy and safety.
In conclusion, the participants benefit from medical research in various ways, including medical insurance, getting medical attention, they receive medical compensation, and they will receive a free medical diagnosis, and improve health care. Risks encountered during the research include psychological, social-economical, physical, and confidentiality laws. These include ethical issues that are encountered before and after medical research. Major ethical issues in the medical field include safety, patient confidentiality, informed consent, voluntary practice, and equity of resources.
