Leadership Practice in Nursing

The healthcare system is an essential part of any country since it directly relates to the health of nation. The quality of the services depends not only on infrastructure and technologies being used but also on the professionalism and skills of the healthcare providers. Nurses are one the most important part of the healthcare system since they directly work with patients and provide them with medical care. The efficiency and quality of healthcare service directly related to the effective management of medical personnel. The leadership skill and proper leadership practice define the success of the managing nurse as a professional.

One of the effective leadership practices in nursing is called ‘enable others to act.’ The study by Silva et al. (2017) shows that this type of leadership is the most frequently practiced one and was mentioned in other international research works. ‘Enable others to act’ leadership practice includes the betterment of interpersonal relationships, generating trust among employees, increasing collaboration, along with the development of personal skills in the team.

Enhanced collaborative work results in better-provided healthcare services and increases the respect among professionals of different specialties. The leader nurses, who are adopting this practice, are constantly involved in their team’s work, developing a cooperative relationship based on respect and dignity. Thus, the responsibility and success of the group are not focused on one person but distributed among all team members.

Moreover, nurses practicing transformational leadership pay a lot of attention to individual uniqueness and advanced communication as critical working processes. This way, the subordinates can feel the right balance between power and care instead of manipulation and control. The leadership practice enhances the communication and support, increasing workers’ engagement, which consequently improves the organizational results.

Managing nurses can also implement the leadership technique called ‘encourage the heart,’ which is based on the involvement and participation of each worker (Silva et al., 2017). The practice encourages every team member to contribute to the achievement of a common goal. The contribution of each worker must be recognized and valued. Also, the idea of the practice is fostering collaboration, sharing the power among team members.

One of the challenges in nursing is implementing evidence-based practices (EBPs) based on the synergy of theoretical knowledge with the need and requirements of individuals or groups of patients. The implementation leadership is a recently developed type of leadership that effectively implements the EBPs. Implementation leadership can be defined as a practical approach to positive change workers’ behavior towards implementing EBPs.

The implementation leadership is based on the transformational leadership strategy. Hence, general leadership skills are prerequisites for the implementation of leadership practice. The main idea of implementation leadership is a strong collaboration of leading nurses in promoting the EBPs via educational opportunities, role modeling and coaching for others, making audits, and giving feedback (Castiglione, 2020). Thus, the implementation leadership can be a solution to improve the quality of healthcare services.

To sum up, several types of leadership practices can be implemented to achieve a higher quality of healthcare services. ‘Enable others to act’ practice involves the collaboration of all workers and promotes the high involvement of employees, increasing trust and respect within the team. Another technique called ‘encourage the heart,’ which focuses on each team member’s contribution to achieving better results, is usually followed by another method called’ encourage the heart.

Transformational leadership is another practice involving the promotion of individual differences and effective communication between team members. Finally, implementation leadership is based on the effective use of evidence-based practice.
