Locating Credible Databases for Healthcare Research

Diagnosis and Overview

Evidence-based practice must always rely on trusted sources to provide the high level of patient care. Unexperienced nurses need responsible supervision to fulfill their job responsibilities. In the created scenario, a nurse working on the medical-surgical floor asks for help because she encounters a disease for the first time. The main disease of the patient is familiar to her, but the patient has a concomitant disease, which is HIV infection. The nurse is interested in how to comply with moral and ethical considerations when working with such a patient and provide proper care for such a concomitant disease.

The Role in Supervising the Search for Evidence in EBP

The role of a bachelor’s nurse is to assist nurses who do not yet have enough experience and knowledge. EBP is the constant development of their professional competencies and the ongoing learning process. That is why the role of the chief nurse is to help other nurses in their research. In this way, the nurse develops the leadership skills needed in medical practice. The nurse is the link in the team of medical professionals, and educational efforts are a contribution to the well-being of all patients in the hospital.

Communication Strategies

The communication strategy is the overall planning of the dialogue. The basis for choosing a strategy should be the goal of communication, in the simulated scenario, the main goal is educational. The impact on the addressee should be carried out through rational treatment using unobtrusive argumentation. The main communication strategy that will be used to provide the nurse with the necessary information is the verbal strategy based on active listening. Since the process must be ethical and efficient, the unexperienced nurse’s concerns must be listened to. Once the nurse has expressed her concerns, she needs to be reassured that she can provide quality care with the new information. It is necessary to transfer experience in an environmentally friendly way so that the nurse retains the desire to learn new information.

Five Trusted Online Databases

CINAHL

CINAHL is a large online database of nursing literature and is an essential source for any medical research. This database contains both fundamental books on nursing and the latest research. Henderson et al. report key ethical considerations that can be used in both treatment and further research (2018). The nurse who encounters an HIV-infected patient for the first time can learn about the ethical approach to such cases.

PubMed

PubMed is a free Medline database access platform, providing medical-related information. Although the database is not aimed only at articles on nursing, PubMed provides access to a variety of interdisciplinary research. Threats et al. highlights the latest methods that nurses can use to contribute to ending the HIV epidemic (2021). The nurse can use this data to further explore the peculiarities of working with HIV-infected patients.

ERIC

ERIC is a free database of educational research; it provides access to nursing books, guides and researches; in addition, ERIC provides access to non-published books. Ferreira et al. present a handbook on developing the educational skills of nurses, including on the topic of HIV (2022). The nurse can gather useful data that will allow her to independently search for the necessary information in the future.

NINR

The National Institute for Nursing Research provides access to an online database of research from national programs. In addition, NINR provides support for nurse-initiated research in EBP. Rouleau et al. defines the ethical behavior of a nurse when working with patients with HIV infection (2019). The nurse can obtain additional information that may be required when counseling this patient in the field related to his comorbidity and the selection of compatible drugs.

MedScape

MedScape provides the latest medical news, research updates, case studies, continuing education opportunities, and disease and drug information to healthcare professionals around the world. Tsikiwa et al. offer a complete and new guide for nurses when working with people living with HIV (2022). A complete guide will allow the nurse to find answers to all questions of interest and continue further study of working with such patients.

Completion of the Study

To conduct further research on the topic of working with HIV-infected patients, it is necessary to expand the database of information search. Further research can be done on the basis of the Google Scholar database. The advantage of this database is that it gives access not only to academic articles. The researcher can find news and complete books on the requested topics. In addition, the database contains a significant amount of research on medical topics, especially regarding nursing practice. Google Scholar provides only peer-reviewed sources and collects information from all open online libraries.

Conclusion

The main role of a nurse with a bachelor’s degree is to create a direction for the training of an unexperienced nurse. To help deal with a patient with an unfamiliar disease, it is necessary to provide databases in which the nurse can find information on a case of interest. Online databases of peer-reviewed articles and books allow for continuous learning. In addition, a nurse using EBP should rely on trusted research information. Online databases provide an opportunity for further study of the topic of interest.
