The Importance of Strategy for Healthcare Organizations

Healthcare organizations are of profound importance in the life of society, as their main task is to maintain the quality of health and well-being of the population. This fact determines the need for their proper functioning and the ability to adapt to external and internal conditions. Thus, hospitals and clinics should have their system of strategic management, thinking, and planning that will help regulate their work and achieve the most productive outcomes from their activities.

For the successful functioning of a medical organization, the correct construction of its activities is necessary. Thus, a strategy is needed, the essence of which “is choosing to perform activities differently than rivals do” (Porter, 1996, p. 44). In other words, it helps to gain competitiveness to occupy a leadership position in the chosen field. Moreover, strategic planning is closely related to this concept, which is defined as drawing up a plan to achieve the goals set by the company. This phenomenon determines the most effective strategic thinking, which is formed based on the actions carried out within the framework of the action plan.

Other critical aspects for achieving a leadership position and increased efficiency of a healthcare organization are strategic management and the organization’s behavior. Thus, the first phenomenon “concerns responsiveness to change to remain relevant” (Ginter et al., 2018, p. 3). Thus, it contributes to adapting to changing conditions. In addition, the organization’s behavior is formed, that is, how it responds to external triggers.

In conclusion, strategy is a crucial aspect of healthcare organizations. Moreover, the concepts of strategic thinking, planning, management, and behavior of companies associated with it play an essential role. They help to cope with external and internal conditions and gain a competitive position that will ensure the organization’s uniqueness. Therefore, hospitals and clinics should pay special attention to these phenomena for the most successful and effective achievement of their goals and objectives.
